Press Release: SL Reports takes lead in fight against online plagiarism
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASESECOND LIFE, SOGNEFJORD – 5 NOVEMBER 2007 – SL Reports, a publicly-listed Second Life corporation trading under the symbol "SLR" at the SL Capital Exchange, clarified it position today in regard to plagiarism and proper attribution of others' written works on the Internet.
Said SL Reports founder and CEO Xavier Mohr, "Plagiarism is a legal issue that even goes beyond what can be considered some of the most intense Second Life dramas."
"It has been, and continues to be, SL Reports policy to provide author and publication citation in addition to in-body URL linking – when appropriate – any time we directly quote another writer," continued Mohr. "We feel this is an industry-standard practice to which most bloggers, writers, and publications - both online and offline - adhere."
Mohr added that it is often easy to forget to cite a source when writing, but such errors should always be corrected when they are brought to the attention of the writer.
"I've seen minor incidents in the past where people have quoted original SLR content without providing reference," stated Mohr. "I'm happy to announce that in all of those instances a friendly comment to the writer has always corrected the error."
SL Reports values and embraces aggregation of news items from multiple sources, quotation of other authors, and even direct republishing of original content. In all such circumstances, however, a citation is expected by most authors and readers.
SL Reports is taking the lead in the Second Life media industry by encouraging all bloggers, publishers, website operators, broadcasters, and DJs to follow industry standards in citation of original content.
"It doesn't matter if you have 50,000 hits per day or none, 5,000 subscribers or just two, 500 viewers or just five," says Mohr. "Operating under the strictest, reputable standards as a self-publisher will earn you a solid, honorable reputation in whatever community you are serving... and no doubt contribute to the eventual success of your product."
SL Reports is an established Second Life media group founded in January 2007 by Second Life resident Xavier Mohr. Mohr is a long-time print and online media professional in real life, currently residing in the U.S. state of Oklahoma.
SL Reports currently boasts five Second Life groups comprised of more than 15,000 Second Life members who receive daily and weekly updates on news items ranging from entertainment to business, finance to other virtual worlds.
