TNW Grid test and online success!!!!
after working several days, TNW is proud to announce that we successfuly brought online our own Second life grid with full admin. we were able to not only connect over the internet to the new grid, but also created and ran 50 regions.
we will not be in world from today until we get back from paris on jan 12th, 2007
with the ability to now run our own grids, this opens up immense possibilities for not only TNW, but for the TNWB brand as we go talk to the potential investors in europe this week

Re: TNW Grid test and online success!!!!
How does it work?
Can i use lindens and my sl inventory on that grid?
And is possible to know who are those investors interested in TNW? They paid you the journey to Paris? If so they must be rich:)

Re: TNW Grid test and online success!!!!
i had to sign a confidentiality agreement so i can't release any details until AFTER the trip, and hopefully....a contract signing in paris :)

most big corporations are rich so yes to your last question

as to how it works, right now i am able to put up a grid and create 50 regions on one pc with virtualy low lag. it will take some scripting work on my end to get it to intergrate into any existing grids, but lets say for instance i wanted to start my own second life project, and charge say.....1000 up front for an estate, 200 a month for tier...the possibilities are unlimited, as is potential for tremendous $$$ profit both in us dollars, euros and lindens

and yes, there is a way to import your linden balances and sl inventory into the tnw grid, but since this is beta testing, i would not reccomend it yet.

If SL dont grow as it did, why should the new independent grid be a success ?
To be an economic sucess it has to be ppl spending money there. Same ppl as in SL. Same money. Split into more grids.

What have i missed ?

Re: TNW Grid test and online success!!!!
Once upon a time, people would buy land from Sl, and while paying tier, would try to resell or lease it for a profit. If TNW can put 50 regions on a puter, get them online for less than buying an island, just imagine the profit.

Is LL charging fees to integrate opensim regions into SL? What do it compares to?

Re: TNW Grid test and online success!!!!
the point is, the grid software is FREE, its opensource. that means if i only charged 50 people 10 bucks a month for an island (not that i would, its hypothetical) i still make a 100% profit off all 50 islands each month because

1) i have so many computers here capable of running the grids, no need for expensive new equipment

2) i already have dsl internet, and to upgrade to a t-3 or fiber optic system here would not impact monthly costs

so it boils down to, if it can be done no matter WHAT price is charged per region, its a proit. as of yet they are not intergrting them in, i am sure that there will be a charge when they do, but on the other hand, the opensim project has their grid up, and from my reading the charge is zero to intergrate there......i think its going to depend on which way the winds blow on opensource, and the steps LL is willing to make. i mean think of it, if you had a choice of 295.00 a month for an island in a grid the size of SL, or 20.00 a month for a grid that is only 1/8th smaller than sl....which would you choose? most people will do both
just my view as i am packing away for paris.
be sure to look for pictures to be posted in the nightclub at TNW all this week

Re: TNW Grid test and online success!!!!
Is the TNW Grid based on OpenSim? I've been running OpenSim for a while and spent a lot of time talking with developers.

OpenSim does not currently support currency. I spent a lot of time arguing with developers about this. They were not interested. The folks at CentralGrid are building their own currency handling routines. Any currency transfers between OpenSim and SL is likely to have to go through a third party. Are you working on something similar?

Also, at presently, OpenSim does not support the import and export of assets. Are you developing your own routines to support import and export of assets? The issue of how to export from the main SL grid remains an open issue. You have a way of addressing this?

As to the costs, I was at a conference with Philip Linden, where he said he expected land prices to remain fairly constant, even with new grids coming online, because the cost of running the servers and supplying the bandwidth will provide a base price for tier prices.

I don't want to be a nay sayer. I think the development of alternative grids is extremely important and I've written a lot about it already on by blog, http://www.orient-lodge.com/Games However, I'm concerned about getting as much details out there as possible.

Re: TNW Grid test and online success!!!!
yes i am using the uncompiled versions from opensim, thus the source code can be modified to have their own import and export of assets as well as the currency handling routines cistome done. and philip linden was right about land prices in one context, that being a noob getting the bandwidth and equipment. for TNW, we already have both that were in use when we first started SL. adding the new abilitys to be LIKE sl and offer land/island sales makes no major impact on tnw because we already had both beforehand so we are just using resources that he had in a closet gathering dust. also, part of this meeting in france does involve possible 3rd party interventions for the transfer of lindens from one server base to another server base, but i dont know all of the details yet
and i do agree, we have to give out as much details on this as possible, even i dont know all of the in's and outs, i just know that it has potential that we need to tap into

Re: TNW Grid test and online success!!!!
I do not mean to disappoint, but I researched the open sim grid information and Linden Labs does not intend to ever connect with outside grids meaning Lindens won't transfer and actually nothing will transfer because they will not connect.
