General Investment Discussion » RL Legal action over SL business?
Re: RL Legal action over SL business?
I think that SL stock markets are more real than fiction. The real world is likely going to try to impose RL laws, fees and regulations sooner or later. Anyone can incorporate
fairly easily and issue shares and there is no reason why
poeple can't meet under a buttonwood tree (the first NYSE)
or on the internet to trade them. To try to shut SL exchanges down in the USA would be like tring to crush capitalism in your own back yard. What next, turn SL into a communist state?
Sadly, there has been some banking problems here and there are RL laws that apply. Lets hope that SL and these new emerging markets will be improved by some regulation in the days ahead.

I don't work for the SEC, or even live in the USA for that matter. I really enjoy trading these markets so far. I was
in the former Soviet Union in the early days of the voucher
privatization in 1994 and during the economic crisis of 1998 so I can tell you that the troubles you are experiencing are minor by comparison.

For the record, I own shares in 20 or so companies
on SL Capital and the WSE worth around $L400K.

General Investment Discussion » WHAT ABOUT THE EXCHANGES?
Re: WHAT ABOUT THE EXCHANGES?
As an investor I have a few points to add. Learning to run a public company in Second Life is a really good opportunity
IMO. As a company owner, if things are going well, you should think about incorporation and possibly someday listing on a RL exchange. You could transfer your entire company, shareholders and all, on to a junior exchange.

If you are running one of the 5? exchanges in SL it would be a good idea to cooperate fully with Linden Labs and develop regulations and avoid any allegations of market manipulation or insider trading.

Shareholder committee group
I would like to start this topic to discuss minority shareholder rights in SL companies ..

A bit about me. First, I live in Canada, and I'm not Russian. I have about 20 years of RL investing experience
some of it in difficult emerging markets. I have also been involved some recent message board shareholders committee
groups. This is a fairly new force in investing .. where minority shareholders form a group on the internet in order to gain a voice at shareholder meetings and in bankrupcy court proceedings.

I have shares in more than 20 SL companies so you may meet me at a future shareholder meeting. Sorry, I don't give trading recommendations .. but will discuss companies from a shareholder perspective.

Re: How Do I Get My Lindens Out Of Here
Do you have money that you want to withdraw from your JT Financial (bank) account .. or is it the exchange that doesn't "seems to work".

Myself, I think the exchange is holding up fine. There are some good buys at the moment.

Re: How Do I Get My Lindens Out Of Here
You have to have some faith in the company CEOs and take a long term view here. Most of the companies have a fairly small percent of the shares on the market and the shares are
tightly held. The money is with the companies (except the new IPO) generally not in the banks.

Most people invest with a long term view. I have some funds with an 8 year lock up. I also have some shares that were
original Russian privatization vouchers from a company owned by Roman Abramovich. For long periods the markets were much like SL Exchange is now, and it was almost impossible to sell. When I bought the shares everyone thought Mr. Putin was going to take the shares and send Roman to Siberia so they were very cheap. Instead he gave him a $13 billion for them. Of course Roman had many more shares than I do :^)

Re: Shareholder committee group
It is tough times for Linden Labs, SL Capital, WSE, and expecially aspiring bankers. But Second Life is a great American creation. There is a vast amount of user created
content, some which can now be invested in. The most important factors are demographics ... billions of people who are yet to try Second Life and ... time.

Sure there is a banking crisis. I bet that before long some bank from China (or Brazil, Russia, or India) will offer to open a SL Bank and steal all the business. Russia already has a real bank (Moneta) in Entropia.

Re: Shareholder committee group
You may be right. Anyway as an investor, thats not my problem. I do still hold some banking shares but not much.
I suspect that a some real banks will emerge .. not offering high interest and trying to sign you up for RL services.

China is planning a online virtual reaality world that can support 7 million online .. so I suspect they will have virtual banks.

The idea of course is to buy the right SL stocks. Some people think that the stock market is about daytrading .. and sometimes a lucky trade comes along and some quick money can be made. But the real plan is to pick the right companies that will grow and hold for the long term .. and reinvest the dividends.

Re: Shareholder committee group
Actually what annoys me is when a seeminly reliable company
like Kejo Merlin on WSE just shuts down. I also would like to know more about the Midas Bank shutdown. I started investing in the fall so I missed most of Ginko. It is actually the collapse, I hate to say fraud of big seemingly
reliable companies that is disturbing with no recovery for shareholders. I suspect that they may not be the last.
It is pretty easy to detect badly run company .. ot's the "Enrons" that are a concern.

Thats quite facinating the medieval history you are using as a metaphor there. I looked it up and intend to read up on that some more. Thanks for the enlightenment :^)

Re: Shareholder committee group
Thanks Sportsbets. I had some shares in Midas Development
(MDC I believe) and am still waiting for my WTF shares. I try to stay away from banks, conglomerates, and funds. I prefer small focused companies with a good business plan.
I do buy and sell the exchange stocks since they are the most liquid and when WSE closed I had a Hope Capital position. Any insight on when WSE will reopen?
